About Reiki

It is the spiritual nature of Reiki that inspires me most. It is a spirituality that is not connected to any religion but could be connected to most of them. It is also a spirituality that is not dependent on any preconceived concept of what God is or isn’t. One simply has to know that there is an energetic force in the universe that is greater than us and is a creative energy.

When I am offering a Reiki session, I feel the Reiki energy that is within me, in fact within all of us.  It is like I am sitting or standing within it and it is everywhere around me and in me.  To me, this is “Being Reiki”

Believing in God in the traditional sense is optional. Some prefer to use terms like universal energy, creative force of the universe, the divine.  Whatever word feels most right for you is fine. And so Reiki offers us the opportunity to connect and unite in a way that can have meaning to all.

There are many different approaches to reiki and the reiki system.  Not all Reiki Practitioners would explain it as I do.  It depends not only on how they were taught but also on their own background and life experience.

I have found Reiki to be incredibly useful for me in raising limiting beliefs to my awareness.  It gives me the opportunity to work with these beliefs and release them one by one.  The growth I experience is positive even though the process may at first be a little troubling. It is essential that a Reiki Practitioner continue to use Reiki for self care.  And it is likewise useful for any person on  a personal growth path as it assists their process.

Traditional Reiki is the term to describe the teachings underpinning Reiki as taught and experienced by Macao Usui Sensei. It is an attempt to return to the deeper meaning of the system of Reiki as it was originally intended.

What is a Reiki treatment like?

Perhaps energy work is new to you. Or perhaps not. It is important that you feel safe and comfortable with anyone who is working in your energy field. This is why I am explaining how I would work with you if you were to choose reiki with me.

Remember that there are a variety of techniques for working with energy. What is most important is trusting the practitioner and that the technique used suits the situation to be addressed. Given this, it is best when we are in rapport, and have established a common “intention” for the energy work.

Your first visit with me usually takes about an hour and a fifteen minutes roughly.  Cost is $70.

When I am offering a Reiki treatment to someone, I begin first with some talk time in order to know better what you are facing along life’s path.  At this time there is an opportunity for building a trusting and caring relationship, and general assessment of the situation. It also gives you, the client, the opportunity to see if it is the right fit for you.

When we connect for that visit, I will have some questions for you to answer in the best way you can at that time. Together we will establish a foundation for what we would do next. We come up with an intention to incorporate into the Reiki experience. The intention is usually something that is related to a healthy perspective or being centred or calm or focused or peaceful or something of that nature.  Ultimately the intention is to receive what is most needed at that moment for the highest good of all concerned.

By this time the system of Reiki has actually already begun.  Reiki energy is flowing. I may use a guided imagery that is customized to the situation we have been discussing and the intention we have formed. Or we may begin with relaxation and breathing into the hara.

I feel Reiki energy within me as soon as I intend to notice it. I don’t see energy fields but as my experience with Reiki increases, I trust my intuitive senses more. That frees me up to allow Reiki to do what needs to be done.  I am not Psychic.

For the actual Reiki treatment I usually first work in the energy field or the area within about 6 to 12 inches around the client.  I will scan your energy field and be guided to place my hands where most needed. Depending on the situation, I usually use some background music that we both appreciate and check that the volume is right for you.

Following this I usually place my hands in different positions on your head, shoulders, trunk, legs and feet.  By the way, you remain fully clothed and usually lie on a massage table. I first ask for permission to touch.  It is perfectly acceptable for a person to request no touching or only touching in the head region and it is not a problem to comply.  On the other hand, there are many people who do not experience much touch in their lives for a variety of reasons.  They find the touch an added therapeutic feature.

Ask your practitioner for specifics regarding the hand positions being used.  If you prefer, the practitioner can place hands above the body rather than actually touching.  Unless otherwise requested, I use a combination of both as I work on the physical body as well as in the energy field.

It is important for you to know that  you are always the one who is in control.  I find that building trust with the client is a big part of the process as it helps them feel more comfortable allowing the energy to do its work.

I know that often following reiki, you may feel much more relaxed with a higher sense of well-being for a time. Let your body do what it needs to and is able to do best for healing. Being in the best place energetically gives your body the best environment in which to balance and heal itself. Sometimes, the healing energy triggers a release and you feel a bit worse before you feel better.  If this happens and you are unsure of it, you can feel free to contact me.  Because energy work is very relaxing, it can help you be in the right frame of mind to sort out issues or problem solve.  It is not psychotherapy but can support the work you may be doing with a psychotherapist if that is your goal.

I usually suggest that people schedule at least 3 or 4 appointments.  We will discuss their spacing depending on the situation and your finances.   Initially I suggest you just come for one session to be sure that you feel it is the right fit for you. Then further sessions would be decided together so that it is in your best interest.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

The relaxation that occurs is visible and palpable. That in itself is a benefit. This means that Reiki helps relieve stress in the physical body. That relaxed state promotes healing.

I see other positive effects from the relaxation. It seems to help people leave the circular thought patterns that go along with challenges. It clears out the garbage chatter and they are able to view a situation from a different perspective. This is helpful in coaching. I see opportunities to use Reiki as a means of helping a person remove blocks and change thought patterns thus helping their connection with life purpose and dealing with life transitions in a healthy way.

You Can also learn Reiki for yourself

Although I have studied Reiki at the Reiki Master Teacher level actually three times, I find the term “Master” to be a misnomer.  For the person who studies the third level of  Reiki, also called Shinpiden, it is really only beginning.   That means I am always learning more by reading, practicing, and even more importantly using Reiki for my own personal and spiritual growth.  More and more I have learned that it is in my own self healing that I can best be of service to others.  The third level along with experience gives a person a start in being able to teach it to others.

The path is long with many ups and downs.  It is a soulful path and one that gives me a sense of purpose.  I have taught Reiki in different locations within or very close to Owen Sound.  If you are interested in taking Reiki classes from me, let’s talk.  I like to have at least three students to run a class. Just keep me posted.  Email me at livingreiki@rogers.com

I have actually attended three different Reiki Master courses.  The first one was an introduction for me. It led me to teaching but it also led me to learn more and study with William Lee Rand in Michigan.  At that point I became a member of the International Centre for Reiki Training (ICRT).  Within the same group of teachers, I studied the Karuna Reiki Master Course and  a Reiki Drumming course.  What valuable experiences these were for me!  With each class, I found that I was deepening my knowledge and experience.

Just this past spring, I studied a more traditional  Reiki based on the older teachings that were part of Usui Sense’s preparation for his transformative experience.  Frans Stiene from the International House of Reiki  (ihreiki.com), prefers to call the third level by its original name, Shinpiden.   The nature of his approach taught me more about Reiki with a focus on the several ways to reach my True Self including the Reiki precepts, the symbols and mantras, meditation, hands-on-healing and Reijus or Reiki Blessings.

I have been moved spiritually from the course  Frans offers.   As I let the process evolve within me, I recognize that learning the Usui/Holy Fire11 Reiki used by the ICRT was exactly the right approach for me at that time.  However I now use the meditations I learned from Frans.

For more information about the classes please check the menu.  And by the way, Frans Stiene, my current Reiki teacher, will be teaching a three day Shinpiden (Reiki 3) course for anyone who has taken Usui Reiki Level 2 in any lineage in person. This will be followed by a Reiki Play Day for anyone who has taken any level of Usui Reiki in person.
