Why Learn Reiki

Many people think you learn Reiki to be able to set up a Reiki practice.  While this may be so for some, it is my experience that the first step and perhaps the main reason for learning Reiki is for your own self  care.  Consider it a means for personal and spiritual development.

This message is intended to give you some of the basic information about the classes.  In the next few months.

Below you will see information related to:

Reiki Level 1 (Shoden)
Reiki Level 11 (Okuden)
Reiki Master (Shinpiden)
Reiki Learning and Practice Day

I prefer at least four people registered for a class. Please let me know of your interest.

Reiki 1 (Shoden) is a 12 hour course.  Sheila Murphy will be sharing the teaching of this course.   We will teach it  in three  four-hour segments.from 9 am till 1 pm on June 7, 14 and 21.
This class is for you  if you have not taken a Reiki class before but perhaps you have experienced Reiki from a practitioner and would like to learn how to use it yourself.  Reiki can be very helpful in many ways and in this class, besides learning how to practice it, you will also learn about many ways it is possible to use it for yourself in  your own self-healing and spiritual growth.  Continual practice is important in developing your sensitivity.

Full Cost is $200.  However if you pay in full by March 17 the cost is only $150.   It includes a non refundable deposit of $75 as well as reading materials and a journal.

The class is offered from 9am till 1:00 each day. It will be in  Owen Sound at Her Wellness on Second Ave east downtown. It is a scent free and animal free setting to allow for those with allergies (including myself).

I have been inspired by what I have been learning through the International House of Reiki and Frans Stiene.  They have approved the courses I offer.  Those who complete the three sessions will receive a certificate acknowledging their completion.  The class will focus on developing spiritual and mental focus by working with the precepts, as well as learning a daily routine for meditation and self-care, hands on healing you can use for family and friends, and you will receive Reiki blessings through attunements and reijus.

You will have some suggested reading before the course starts as well as meditation and practice homework between segments.  Following completion of the course, I will offer you a special discount on receiving sessions from me if you so wish over the next few months.

Reiki 11 (Okuden) is an eight-hour course.  You must have taken the first level from someone in-person in order to take the second level. If you have not taken the first level as traditional Reiki, there is required reading and practice to prepare. I will send this as an email.

The Okuden course will be offered the mornings of Friday May 10 and 17 from 9 am till 1pm.   Students who have not taken Shoden as their level 1 will be asked to follow a pre-course instruction with instructions via email.  Registering at least two weeks prior to the course is preferable to complete the reading and meditations.

The class is offered from 9am till 1:00.   It will be in  Owen Sound at Her Wellness on Second Ave east downtown. It is a scent free and animal free setting to allow for those with allergies (including myself).

It is best to have had at least three months of practice with Reiki 1 and especially practice with the meditations, before taking Reiki 11.  Reiki 11 teaches you ways to strengthen the flow of Reiki energy using three symbols and mantras.  In Reiki 11 you will also learn Distant Healing and some particular Reiki techniques and meditations to focus the energy in different ways.

Taking Reiki classes a second time is not necessary even if it has been years since previous classes occurred.  However, I have found that taking repeats with different teachers is beneficial. If you are considering this, I would be happy to discuss it with you over email.

Cost $200  There is a $75 non refundable deposit to register. Pay in full by March 3rd and cost is only $160.  Those who have completed Shoden with me or Sheila Murphy receive a special rate.  Please contact me if you need more information.

Following the second level you may attend any of the Reiki workshops I offer unless it is specifically directed to Reiki Masters.  There is always a special price for people who have taken Reiki classes through me.

The Reiki  Master Course is a three-day course  that requires a further commitment to using Reiki regularly for yourself and your own self growth.  You may or may not choose to practice it on others .  Likewise teaching is an option you may or may not choose to follow.  In order to take this course, you must have the first and second levels taken from someone in person (in other words not online).  I also ask that you follow a daily self Reiki practice several months in advance.

Second Annual Reiki Learning and Practice Day.
This full day workshop runs from 9:30 to 3:00 on Friday May 24.  We will break for lunch and there are several restaurants close by. Bleeding Carrot serves excellent vegan lunches and you can request gluten free.

In April I will have attended a four-day retreat in Cincinatti led by Frans Steine.  I am sure we will once again have learned more Reiki techniques and meditations which I will be able to share with you. As well we will have the opportunity to review some of the meditations you may have already learned.

Requirements: I would prefer to have everyone having taken the second level of Reiki.  I expect there will be several Masters people in attendance. If you have taken only the first level but have practiced Reiki on yourself and family and friends, you may attend.

The full cost for the day would be $100.00 however, as I promised last year, I am aiming to encourage people to continue to practice Reiki for themselves and to spread the word to others.  So ….

If you have attended any of my classes (Reiki 1, 2 or Master) deduct $15
If your bring a new person who did not attend the first one, deduct $10 each. (Remember new people should have Reiki 2 or higher or Reiki 1 if they have continued to practice on themselves.)
If you attended last year, deduct $5.
This means that if you have taken one of my Reiki classes, and bring a new person and took the class last year, you pay only $70.

Visualizing Yourself as a more senior person

You may recall this message I posted last summer. Serendipitously I happened to come across it recently. Birthdays are only a number.  Although this sounds like a light and perhaps frivolous comment, it is actually deeper than you might think. We attach too many expectations to age numbers, sometimes in the form of shoulds, and sometimes in the form of diminishing abilities. Currently I am paying attention to releasing limiting beliefs around getting old.  Let me share a personal story.

Time passes quickly.  Sixteen years ago was 2002.  That seems fairly recent. It is in this millennium, post 9/11, and post retirement for me.  That thought is  relatively neutral until I move those 16 years into the future and realized how old I will be then.  Those numbers will have accumulated rather briskly. Yikes!

At first I was dragged down by this thought, coupled by continuing notices of the serious illnesses and/or deaths of friends, acquaintances, former classmates and relatives who are my age and even younger.  Dwelling on this thought was a downer.  I began thinking of myself losing ground, becoming weaker, less involved.  UGH! It was not a good feeling and I noticed that it was affecting my daily life in the present.  I noticed that I already was beginning to cut back on things I loved doing.

I find that Reiki self practice often guides me to higher ground. While some of the above helps me feel compassion toward those experiencing ill health, compassion is not meant to drag me down too.  Reflecting on this, I began to notice those things that gave me insights into what I needed to do.  Perhaps synchronistically I happened to see a Facebook ad from Mind Movies.  Perhaps you have seen those.  Very useful perspective and exercises.  I happened to pass through some of the previous workshops I have led on intentions, visualizations, and the effects of our thinking. I realized that I had a limiting belief about getting older that I did not need to hang on to.

As a Reiki practitioner and teacher I feel it is most important to do my own self reiki and self healing.  The more I can heal old stuff within my thought patterns and past life experiences, the better I can work with others and provide the right energy and capability to offer what they may need at that moment for their highest good. Through self care, I see old patterns that can be released. For my own personal and spiritual growth, I see a practitioner who uses Reiki and other methods to help me release them.  We work well together because I trust her ability.  I never expect a magic fix.  It always requires inner work on my part and her capabilities allow me to be more aware of the required work.  I hope I provide that for the people I see.  That is  my intention.

After I went to see my energy practitioner, I also listened to some of the audio and videos on Mind Movies and it became very clear to me what I needed to do.

Besides releasing the limiting beliefs, my inner work was to create a visualization of me as an older woman, still participating in the growth of others, still actively involved and healthy as I engage in life.  I am currently working on that image of my true self, not giving it an age number, but seeing me in the image as an older woman.  I look vibrant, caring, energetic, bright, and mentoring others, facilitating, engaging and enjoying life.  My family are also enjoying my vibrancy as an older woman and we are doing fun things together.  This is uplifting.  This image contributes significantly to the vibrancy I feel today. I am making different life choices. I welcome Birthdays. I am grateful for them.

I invite you to pay attention to how you see yourself today and in the future as you get older.  If you have learned Reiki, it can be very helpful in asking for guidance and releasing the limiting beliefs.  You may very well be able to do this without extra help but if you need me, just contact me.  We can set up an appointment.

By the way, I find this concept is also useful for people who have  been dealing with some serious “stuff” from their past and want to have a sense of “where from here”.  When a lot of time has been spent reviewing the past and connecting it to “why today”, it can sometimes lead you to a stuck place.  You may need a way to move forward from here.  This may be helpful for you.

Moving into 2019 with an Authentic Way of Being

Once again we approach another year.  2019.  Some see New Years Resolutions as a list of things you hope to accomplish; however many goals on the list are the same ones you had last year. So now what? Should you bother?

Do do do.  What do we wish to do or accomplish?  What is really important?  Another “To Do List” is not what you need when you already have a list of tasks that you never seem to get around to.  Each day ends by simply writing several of the things that were to be accomplished today onto the new list for tomorrow. It is a busy world.

Is it possible to approach this traditionally significant date in a more effective manner? Over the years I have been using the term intentions instead of resolutions.  I think of an intention as something that resides deeper in my heart.  Sometimes I am not even fully aware of my intentions. But my intentions do govern my actions.  Look at that picture of the tree again. The intention of the tree overcame the challenges of the location for its growth.  It is a strong tree.

When it is the right time, sit quietly and let your meaningful intentions for being come to the surface.  What do I mean?  What is important right now in your life at this time? Really important.  For example do you want more peace of mind, or more authentic connections to the people you love most.  Perhaps you want to have a way to deal with  the news you really wish was not happening.  How do you really want to be as you move forward in this new year?  Let this come from your true authentic self.

This is entirely different from what you want to do.  First you want to know how you want to be in relation to the life ahead of you.  Just let it come to you.  Ask for guidance. It could relate to your relationship or your family or your work or your community or your spirituality or your health and aging or ……

Notice how there tends to be a somewhat spiritual element to what is meaningful to you.  It feels like you are connecting to life purpose.  Be still. Let it become more and more conscious for you.  This will take some time.  Breathe deep. Let it unfold. Journal about it. There is not a dead line. January 1st can come and go and it doesn’t matter. Take time to have a real sense of what is your intention and how you want to be.  Being will be  the foundation for  what you will do  to live it out fully.

As you become aware of your deeper intentions, then start to develop the means. What do you need to do to be able to be  how you want to be?

What an inspiring feeling it is to be more and more in touch with who you are!  Let your inner bright light shine!

A side note: living life meaningfully has been important for me for many years.  My doctoral dissertation was a qualitative study on how people make changes in their lives related to what is meaningful to them.  I have continued that personal study through reading, writing articles, creating newsletters, working with Lance Secretan, and of course studying, sharing and teaching Reiki.  From when I began to teach nursing until forever, it has been part of what I bring to my work and my life.  I would be honoured to read anything you would like to share with me regarding your personal story of finding meaning. Looking Ahead

My good friend Jan Lapp reminded me of a quote from “Women Who Run With Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.   During this week before we begin the new year, I gather reflections that I can use as I decide how I wish to be through the coming year.  We each have our own unique roots from which we shine our light. This quote has meaning for me so I share it with you:

“Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale. 

“One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday

This time of year gives us the opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and reflect on our life path.  As the years add on to my precious life I ponder the deeper meaning of who I am, what is it that I am here to be and to do.  More and more I find the Reiki Precepts give me a framework to work within and live the best I can on a daily basis.

Do not bear anger.  I notice how just saying that to myself releases the feelings I may be holding on to about others and situations.  Often I say to myself “For now, just for today, it doesn’t really matter”.  Just for today I can do that.

Do not worry.  I realize that worry is so ineffective.  If I can do something about it, then I need to do it.  If not, why give it my energy?  Some issues are of real concern.  Climate Change is a big one.  Worrying about it is simply giving energy to fear and doing nothing.  It ends up being a huge distraction to living fully.

Be grateful.  As I release the anger and eliminate worry I more easily reflect on all that I can be grateful for.  It is uplifting. It raises my energy. I am no longer fixated on what is not going well but realize that there are may good things happening and I can contribute too.

Be true to your self and your way.   In this place of higher energy I am more able to look at who I am and my sense of purpose begins to emerge and grow.  I get it. I know what I am able to be and do.  As I think ahead to January and New Year goals, I can use this as a foundation.

Have compassion for yourself and others.  I am not perfect.  I am learning to love my imperfections, my weaknesses and inadequacies.    I am learning to laugh at myself.  As I learn to love all aspects of who I am, I begin to see that others also are not perfect and it is OK.  We are all on a learning journey.  Some things we learn faster than others.  And so I have compassion for myself and for others.  No need to judge or label.  Hmm.

This helps me release the anger I had to work on related to the first precept.  It also helps me accept what is truly me.  In fact more and more I see how all five precepts are interrelated.

With all this in mind, I wish all of you a very thoughtful and compassionate experience over this holiday season.  May you love yourself and in so doing find inner strength to love others more.

May 2019 be a year of growing hope for humanity, for the leadership of many countries,  for life on planet earth.  May we all learn to love people of all races, religions, classes and philosophies as we eliminate all labels. We are one.

Reflections on quotes from Frans Stiene

Summer busyness accompanied by dismantled routines distracts me. It is not easy to consistently follow the meditations I had intended to do. Today I begin again.  I remember not to judge myself but the tendency is there and it takes time to let that go and just accept and love who I am.

Frans Stiene’s latest book “Reiki Insights” (available on amazon .com) gives me some thoughts to remember. The Chapter on page 75 is titled “How  to Stop Being Uncomfortable with Ourselves” .  How true that the Reiki practices are not easy and can “stir up stuff”.  Generally we do not like looking deep within ourselves.  The process tends to be an up and down process for me. When I am uncomfortable with “the stuff” I dig up, I f ind myself slowing down my practice and even ‘accidentally’ forgetting about it.

Frans says “It is like trying to train a wild horse; the wild horse represents our confused mind. It takes a lot of effort and patience to train a wild horse and sometimes we fall off the horse and hurt ourselves. We stir up emotions , things we do not want to look at: fear, worry, anger, you name it. But if we want to help others, then it is of utmost importance that we start to tame our own confused mind first.”

It is when I do not want to look at myself that I tend to blame others, or circumstances, or life for what I see as my failings.  We do that, don’t we?  We blame others and/or ourselves, labelling ourselves and others in the process.  How can we get out of that pattern?  First we have to recognize what we are doing.  Oooooh that is a tough one!  How do we get out of this habit when we really don’t want to admit our shortcomings.

Frans tells us “It means that we start to accept ourselves for who we are with all our pain, discomfort, joy, issues and attachments. We start to become friends with ourselves again…  I call this ‘being naked’ with yourself.  Being naked is about accepting yourself completely, without judging or labeling.  It is letting go of criticizing ourselves.  The precept ‘show compassion to yourself’ is pointing this out.” 

This brings to mind the concept of the shadow self. I found reading Debbie Ford’s book “Dark Side of the Light Chasers” meaningful in helping me understand this concept.  Yet “getting it” intellectually does not mean that we are able to make it real for us.  I know in my head that when I see something I react to in another, there is a good chance I need to look at that within myself.  But oh how difficult that can be.  I resist.  And sometimes out of the blue one day, I realize at a deeper level that it is true within me and I need to accept it.  When I finally do that, does it ever change how I view the other.  Little by little, step by step,  I learn more about me and become just a bit more comfortable with myself.

This brings me to a question for you.  In one or two words, can you share with me/us what is the most challenging thing for you to accept about yourself?  Just acknowledging that can be a big step in your process

For me it is the “nastiness”.  You only need to give one word.

I can sometimes speak in a nasty tone with those I love the most.  I do not think of myself as a nasty person. But I am learning to accept that there are circumstances when that nasty side shows its face.  I don’t like it and I deny it but today I realize it is there, showing its face occasionally, but staying hidden from my self awareness.  In accepting it, perhaps it will be less hidden from me.

To end this reflection I quote Frans again: “When we stop labelling and judging ourselves, we reach a state of mind of stillness.”

Article: Enriching  What You Love To Do

Do you find some days seem to nudge you just a little further, a little deeper, a little more meaningfully?  Today, I once again picked up a book I brought with me on this trip to Ecuador.  It’s called The Book On Karuna Reiki: Advanced Healing Energy for Our Evolving World.  I first met the author, Laurelle Shanti Gaia, when I took the Karuna Reiki course that Laurel and her husband Michael taught in Sedona in 2014. As I read her words I see her image and hear her voice. She continues to be one of my teachers through her writing and CDs. Laurelle shares her gifts with warmth and total inclusiveness.

There is more to share about Laurelle. Within a year after the class I took, something totally unexpected append to Laurelle. She had a “stroke”.  Actually a bleed as an aneurysm burst. She was unconscious for three weeks. Friends, colleagues and family sent Reiki and prayers.  Her healing journey was one only Laurelle can tell and I hope she will someday share it in more depth.  However I invite you to read her words about her newer perspective about the meaning of healing. Insightful and thought provoking.  Here is the link to what she wrote.

Laurelle’s husband, Michael Baird, taught the Reiki Drumming course I took in Sedona in October 2016. He began the class with his story about how he learned to bring Reiki to Drumming. It was Laurelle who guided him to bring the two together for a stronger, more profound healing effect. Besides the healing experience of the two-day class, it also opened me to something new for me.  Inside of me a voice kept telling me to help people bring Reiki to what they already love doing–just as Michael did with Drumming.

It was a small nudge at first and I could see the value of it.  Little by little I have grown to accept the nudge and be open to how it could be possible.

I suppose you could say that this is the birthing of both the Newsletter I will send out six times a year, as well as the workshop for which I am almost ready to launch the beta test.

A New Development

Apologies if you have already received an email about this.  Otherwise, please read on.

Time is moving along and it is already mid February. Spring will be here in another 8 or 10 weeks. I mean spring as we like to see it with green grass and signs of flowers poking up. Spring is about growth. I know you are interested in growth too– personal growth, spiritual growth, in fact mind, body, spirit growth. That is why I sense you will be interested in this information.

I am developing a contact list I can use with MailChimp. This way I will send out a Newsletter and use this blog minimally if at all.  Not sure if I may even delete my FaceBook page at some point. You will notice a link below at the bottom.

Subscribers will receive my Newsletter by email about 6 times a year. It will be more structured than my blog and more like a Newsletter. In it you will see one or two relevant articles, (mostly by me but not always), Information about workshops and Reiki classes I will offer, and information about some important events others are leading which I think might interest you. My intention is to keep it simple, infrequent and relevant to what you want.

I am sure the evolution of this Newsletter will unfold as it is meant to. I don’t want to define it too specifically yet. Feedback from readers will be helpful in guiding its evolution.

Reiki: Ripples to Waves

When we take a step to help make the world a better place, we make ripples. The ripples extend from you to those you touch personally and continue to extend outward from those people to others.  Suppose we were to take a bigger step, be a bit more vulnerable, send out more and bigger ripples, can’t you see that soon the ripples have built on each other and become a wave?

Join me in looking at this further. Reiki energy responds to your requests with what is for the highest good of all concerned. Reiki energy comes from the highest source, from the creator, from the highest good. It does no harm.  You know that a Reiki session takes you to a place of deep relaxation that allows your body mind and spirit to heal at just the right pace. It feeds our soul and touches our heart.

As the energy moves through you, Reiki helps you release blocks. Blocks are places where you hold energy for a variety of reasons. Many say that it is blocks in the emotional field that lead to physical symptoms. This makes sense knowing that stress can affect your life in many ways including physical illness.  Blocks can also hold you back in your growth path.

Yes, you can also bring Reiki into your life to help you move forward in your personal growth and in your life goals. If you do what you have always done, you will get what you always got. But taking that big leap is needed to move you forward, to transform your thoughts and behaviours. It requires courage, inner strength, patience and perseverance. It isn’t a smooth ride. It’s like taking the road less travelled and having to work your way through wild raspberries and some poison ivy. You reach a place of beauty and awe but the path has its challenges. Reiki can also give you what you need to handle the challenges.

If you have already taken Reiki level 1 or more, you can use reiki daily, ask for guidance and send Reiki energy to your intentions.  Although this is not difficult, sometimes it is easier with someone along side reminding you and encouraging you.

The workshop I am designing is almost ready to post so keep watching.  The input I have received from some of my clients and Reiki friends has been very useful in helping me create a package that will serve you well.

You have gifts that you know are valuable.  You have taken them so far but now you can consider taking that jump to a level that will help you build more confidence, be more successful and influence more people with love, compassion, encouragement, and beauty to help make this world a better, more beautiful, loving and caring place.

Strengthen Your 2017 Intentions with Reiki

IMG_0869At this time of year we often feel prompted to review the past in an effort to consider a direction for the future.  Some call it “making resolutions”.  I prefer to use words like direction and intention because it moves me to a place within where I consider how I want to be over the next year.  I think a resolution is often filled with “shoulds” —  something that comes from without in an effort to please or impress others … or the mirror image of myself.  Over the last ten or more years I have given a lot of attention to intentions in workshops, retreats and personal coaching.

Personally there are some very serious things to consider as I examine the direction for 2017.

  1. Unless you are uniquely blessed with a strange genetic aberration, you are likely getting older. Me too.  As we all get older, I find that health becomes a bigger factor in one’s life.  I hear people say things like “I want to be able to enjoy and play with my grandchildren” or “I want to have quality of life as I age.”  Health seems to be high on the list of directions for the coming year.
  2. At the same time, we realize our mortality and this is another factor that kicks in sometime after age 50.  It nudges one to notice the decreasing number of years left and the importance of leaving a legacy.  Depending on how close retirement is, a person begins to think about ‘what next?’. Some people talk about freedom after retirement.  “Freedom to do what?” I have been retired for several years but still look at what is next, how do I want to be in the year ahead?
  3. The last year has challenged us with some surprise and very concerning situations worldwide.  Syria, Brexit, US elections, climate change, the death of several musicians and performers, family conflicts, financial worries, poverty, the murder of so many aboriginal women, and more.  Our world is in need of positive influences from someone somewhere …  from people living ordinary lives just caring and giving attention to what is needed.  Sometimes we need courage to speak up for what we stand for.  One person cannot do everything but when each of us considers one or two things we can do and ways we can be in a loving, courageous and caring way in situations in our lives, we become part of the movement to make the world a better place.  So how can we be different in the year ahead in an effort to help move us all to a better world?

Setting your intentions is much like making affirmations.  While some like to think of them as goals, I like to give them more power by wording them more like affirmations.

Begin each intention with “I am…”.  Here are a few examples:

 Yes I want to be healthy so I might say “I am making healthy choices in eating and exercising”  Or  “I am healthy and vibrant”

What do I want to leave behind for others? “I am practicing Reiki on myself and others every week.” ” I am continuing to heal myself in order to be better able to help heal others.” ” I am seeking out more learning opportunities for Reiki.”

“I am inwardly strong and courageously speaking my truth honestly and lovingly.”

Your intentions may be very different from mine.  Some people are looking for peace of mind, a sense of fulfillment, love.  The list goes on.

Reiki can play a role throughout the process.  Ask for guidance in determining your intentions.  Write your intentions on a paper and send Reiki to the intention.   Read you intention every day and send Reiki energy to your intention asking for assistance in bringing it to fruition. Express gratitude knowing that what you ask for is for the highest good of all concerned.  Then trust, and let go of the outcomes.
